Visceral fat thickness and its associations with pubertal and metabolic parameters among girls with precocious puberty
Abstract
p>b>Objective./b> This study aimed to investigate associations of central obesity with sexual maturation and metabolic parameters among Korean girls with precocious puberty. /p> p>b>Patients and Methods./b> This retrospective study evaluated data from 72 girls under 8-years of age with a chief complaint of early breast development. The patients were categorized as having central precocious puberty(CPP) or non-CPP, based on their gonadotropin-releasing hormone stimulation test results. Visceral fat thickness (VFT) was measured using ultrasonography, and was defined as the distance from the linea alba to the aorta. The patients’ anthropometric, metabolic, and hormonal parameters were also evaluated./p> p>b>Results./b> Increased VFT was correlated with an early onset of thelarche (r = –0.307, i> P /i>=0.034). VFT was negatively correlated with sex hormone-binding globulin concentrations (r = –0.296, i> P /i>=0.012), and positively but non-significantly correlated with triglyceride concentrations (r = 0.136, i> P /i>=0.255) and HOMA-IR (r = 0.188, i> P /i>=0.114). Among obese patients (body mass index percentile of >85%), patients with CPP had lower VFT, compared with patients with non-CPP. /p> p>b>Conclusion./b> Central obesity defined using VFT might be associated with early pubertal development in Korean girls. However, VFT was not higher in patients with CPP than non-CPP, and was not significantly correlated with insulin resistance. Further large, longitudinal studies are needed. /p>
